He was just 19 years old when he began his professional football career with Panathinaikos’ first team, having come up through the club’s academy. His talent had already impressed many, and in his first year as a starting player—under the trust of then-coach Vasilis Daniil—he made his debut in the Champions League qualification group stage. One such moment came during the 2000-01 season when Panathinaikos qualified for the Round of 16 in the Champions League. It was November 8, 2000—on his name day—when Angelos Basinas secured the team’s qualification with a penalty kick, eliminating Juventus. His penalty not only paved the way for a legendary European victory but remains one of the greatest moments in Greek football history, with the fans at OAKA experiencing it with unparalleled passion!
One of the most iconic goals in Angelos Basinas’ career was scored in 2002 during the Fenerbahçe – Panathinaikos (1-1) match in the UEFA Cup.
The match took place in the intense atmosphere of “Şükrü Saracoğlu,” where Fenerbahçe hosted Panathinaikos.
In the 15th minute, Basinas unleashed an incredible shot from just below the center line, sending the ball rocketing into the back of the net! Fenerbahçe’s goalkeeper had no chance to react, and the score became 0-1 in favor of Panathinaikos. On December 9, 2003, Itzhak Shum’s Panathinaikos triumphed over Rangers in the final match of the Champions League group stage, securing qualification for the UEFA Cup.
